If you haven’t noticed, our job notice boards are now fuller than a shopping cart at Aldi on pay week. Hiring in the resource sector has been steadily growing since the lows of the 2008 GFC. The downturn saw many people return to their home state, leaving more opportunities for locals, as the gears of industry continue to pick up the pace.
But who’s hiring, and what positions will be in the highest demand in 2018? What skills do you need to rise to the top of the pile?
To start with, just about any position within the resource sector requires: National Police Clearance, Pre-Employment Medical and ability to pass DAS. It could also be worth earning or renewing your first aid certificate.

Reckon it’s for you? Here’s what you’ll need:
- Experience servicing and maintaining mobile plant mining equipment (CAT, Komatsu or Hitachi)
- Trade Certificate
- Rigging ticket and forklift ticket
Drillers Offsider (Assistant)
A drillers offsider is ultimately a physically demanding role, but if you’re healthy, strong and resilient, plus happy to work in remote locations, it’s a key role in a resource operation. Offsiders often work in extreme conditions and long hours, and due to the danger of working with heavy machinery, safety is paramount.
You won’t need any experience just a manual drivers’ licence.
Drill Rig Fitter
A drill rig fitter, often works in fault finding and diagnosis, preventative maintenance and ensuring the equipment is repaired to operation in a safe manner. You’ll often be required to carry out scheduled maintenance on drill rigs, support trucks and other ancillary equipment.
You’ll want to have a Heavy Rigid (HR) drivers’ license, experience in hydraulic maintenance, and Doggers/Riggers Certificate.
